BFRO #7456: Unusual call silenced coyotes, frightened dog

On November 5, 2003 I heard something which sounded human vocalize about 9:30 P.M. It sounded like a call of something which struck me as being human. It was just outside of Harrison Hot Springs. I live at the foot of a mountain. I was out with my dog when I heard this eerie call, which is the only way to describe it. I know the sounds of all kinds of wild life, so I would know if it was a bear or owl. It was none of the usual sounds I hear all the time. It sounded close, near the base of the mountain.The coyotes had just started their usual night time howling, so I know it was not them. When I heard this unknown sound, the coyotes stopped their singing immediately. My dog, which is a very large male black lab, tucked his tail down and headed for home at a dead run. This dog regularly chases bears across the field at the base of the mountain, so it was something he had never heard before. Nor had I.The first thing that came to my mind when I heard it was the name Sasquatch. The hairs stood up all over my arms, as they are doing as I type this. I do not know why I thought it was a Sasquatch, but I did then, and having time to think about it, I am just as sure now as I was then.I talked to John Green, who is our resident expert on the Sasquatch. He ran down all the things it could have been and I knew all those sounds and it was not any of them. He suggested I send the information to your organization. I had to think about it for a while because it was night and I could not see anything. I finally decided to tell you about it.The vocalization was a long drawn out ahhhhhhhhhsort of sound. It was quite loud and varied in intensity. It scared me, not because I thought I was in any danger, but because it was so unexpected and because I could not identify the sound. It also scared the coyotes into quiet for about 30 minutes. I guess whatever it was, it was still around their vacinity for about that length of time. They started their singing again then, but from a very different place than where they first started. They had moved from the southwest across our road to the east behind our home, a distance of nearly a half mile. They usually hang around the base of the mountain across the field from where I live.We have lived her for over 18 years and have never heard anything like it. We hear bears, cougars, lynx, owls and such, but nothing like this. From the sound of it, it was at the base of the mountain across the field. I figured that out from hearing various animals and being able to see them and judge the distance.That is about all I can tell you about what I heard. I have no idea what it was but I felt it was a Sasquatch. My husband was at work, so he was not here. It seems to me others must have heard it, but when I asked around, no one did. I guess if you were in the house with the TV going, you may not have heard it. I guess because I was out walking my dog, I did.

Unfortunately no. My husband was at work and when I inquired if any of my neighbors had heard anything, they had not as they were in the house at the time watching TV. I told my husband about it the next day, but he was not home at the time.
