📝 Description
It is early fall or late summer, around 1998. My daughter and I were driving west on Hwy 12 going to our cabin in Packwood. It was late, probably midnight or 1 a.m. As I recall it wasnt raining, but was a dark night, either overcast or no moon. Just before we hit the top of the pass, probably right around where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses the highway, something ran across the road in front of us, about 100 yards in front of us. It crossed from the right side of the road to the left side. I think it took 3 or 4 long steps, and was across the road. My daughter thinks it was at least 7 feet tall. It was covered in hair but difficult to say what color as it was dark out. It walked across the road upright, on two legs. We joked that maybe it was a bear, but bears dont walk on two legs. Honestly, I was more focused on the right shoulder of the road, as when animals cross the road, often another one will follow. The elk Ive barely missed hitting while driving at night have always been the 2nd or 3rd ones to cross. I remember slowing down, but saw nothing else, it crossed in front of us quickly, and was gone. We didnt give it a lot of thought at the time but we both remember the event the same to this day.
