๐ Description
From mid-November 2024 through early 2025, residents across New Jersey reported a wave of large, drone-like objects flying at night over towns and near sensitive infrastructure such as Picatinny Arsenal and the Bedminster area. Federal agencies opened investigations, received thousands of tips, and deployed detection technology. By December 2024 officials stated there was no evidence of a foreign threat and many sightings were misidentifications of manned aircraft, stars, or lawful drones. In January 2025, White House and FAA officials indicated many flights were authorized for research or private use, and temporary flight restrictions were issued at key sites. In April 2025, the FAA announced drone-detection testing in Cape May to evaluate detection capabilities. Overall, there was no confirmed hostile activity; investigations and monitoring continued with efforts to improve detection and regulation.
๐ Circumstances
Reports began around November 18, 2024, with a spike in sightings over northern and central New Jersey near critical infrastructure and military facilities. A national hotline received thousands of tips; a joint DHS/FBI/DoD/FAA effort reviewed sightings and found many to be misidentifications or lawful aircraft. Temporary flight restrictions were enacted around multiple sites and later adjusted. By early 2025, officials reiterated there was no evidence of a foreign threat and that many sightings were not drones in restricted airspace.
๐ค Physical Description
Witness accounts described large, car-sized drones with bright lights, sometimes flying in formation and emitting a loud hum. Some reports noted drones without lights or larger-than-typical hobbyist drones. Images and footage circulated widely, but many objects were later identified as manned aircraft, stars, or other non-drones.
โน๏ธ Additional Details
Numerous agencies coordinated an ongoing response; the FAA imposed temporary flight restrictions at dozens of sites, later replaced by targeted testing and monitoring. By December 2024โJanuary 2025, officials stressed no national-security threat and highlighted the difficulty distinguishing drones from other aerial phenomena. In April 2025, the FAA announced drone-detection testing in Cape May to evaluate detection technologies and their impact on aviation systems.
