📝 Description
Ottawa-based translator and longtime Yukon backcountry resident Guy Mirabeau, 66, flew by small plane into the remote Chain Lakes area of central Yukon on June 24, 2014, telling his pilot he planned to paddle out via the Hess and Stewart rivers and did not book a pickup. He was reported missing by family on July 2, 2014. Multi-day searches by Yukon RCMP and territorial officials around Chain Lakes, the Hess and Stewart rivers located his auxiliary cabins and a stashed green canoe; later, guides reported human footprints on a Stewart River sandbar. RCMP conducted additional aerial and ground checks in late 2014 and again in 2015, but no remains were found. The case remains open, with active searching concluded and no confirmed recovery as of December 7, 2025.
🔍 Circumstances
June 24, 2014: Mirabeau was dropped by floatplane at Chain Lakes, central Yukon, near the site of his former backcountry cabin. He did not arrange a pickup and stated he would exit by canoe via the Hess and Stewart rivers. Family and friends received letters indicating he did not want to grow old and suggested an intent to take his own life near one of his cabins. July 2, 2014: family reported him missing. Early July 2014: RCMP and Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources staff searched on foot around Chain Lakes; a small nearby structure contained additional written communication indicating potential whereabouts, which did not lead to a find. Searches located a mountain cabin, another cabin along a creek toward the Hess, and a battered green canoe near the Hess River. Late July 2014: a hunting guide reported footprints on a Stewart River sandbar near the Hess–Stewart confluence; RCMP responded by helicopter but found no other evidence. Follow-up checks included aerial overflights at −40°C in November 2014 and ground searches in July and August 2015; no trace was recovered. RCMP later ceased active searching, but the file remains open.
👤 Physical Description
Male, approximately 5 ft 8 in (173 cm); age 66 at the time of disappearance; grey/greying hair. Earlier accounts from his time at the cabin describe him as often bearded and wearing plaid shirts, but no official clothing description at his June 2014 departure was published.
