📝 Description
Daniel Trask, a 28-year-old Waterloo, Ontario man, disappeared on November 3, 2011 while visiting the Temagami backcountry in northeastern Ontario. He was last seen in Temagami, Ontario, purchasing food and asking about a map for a backcountry trip. His gold 2000 Chevy Impala was found November 11, 2011 in Camp Wanapitei parking area along Red Squirrel Road on Temagami Lake. In May 2012, a paddler found some of his clothing (lime-green snow pants, jacket, hat/scarf) about 46 kilometers from the car, near Diamond Lake/Lady Evelyn Lake area. A backpack and snowshoes were located August 12, 2013 along the east shore of the Northeast Arm of Diamond Lake. In May 2015, remains were located in the Temagami backcountry near Lady Evelyn Lake, Medina Township, Temiskaming District, Ontario; these remains were positively identified as Daniel Trask on May 28, 2015. The investigation, supported by Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue (MibSAR) volunteers, concluded with the identification of his remains and no public confirmation of foul play. The case has been a catalyst for advocacy around missing persons investigations in Ontario and contributed to subsequent legislative efforts related to missing persons across the province. The Ontario Missing Persons Act framework subsequently gained attention in Ontario’s Legislature. As of the latest available reports, the remains represent the final status of this case.
🔍 Circumstances
Disappearance occurred during a backcountry exploration trip in Temagami. Last seen in Temagami buying supplies; vehicle located at Camp Wanapitei, Red Squirrel Road. Belongings (clothing, backpack) were found at Diamond Lake/Lady Evelyn Lake area over subsequent years. In May 2015, remains were discovered by MibSAR volunteers in the Temagami backcountry and were later identified as Daniel Trask by authorities on May 28, 2015.
